Conecting Rod by ANGOT, ELCRIN, GAUBERT
During this project, we had to design different parts of an engine. Here we will especially talk about the 3d Printing fabrication of the connecting Rod of this engine.
This piece is complicated because of the high number of holes and angles which are composing it. Moreover, we have to observe the bridges created during its fabrication and of course to proportion the sizes of differents walls in order to respect the rules that we’ve seen earlier.
As a reference we know that the nozzle size used on our 3d printer is 0.4 mm. This piece is important for the stress transmission in the engine so we can imagine that we need some excellent mechanical qualities. Obviously we will need to ensure an important fil density. Around 50 %.
We have a lot of curves on our rod, so we have to set a layer height around 0.09, in order to be close of the reality of the geometry.
There are two bridges, longer than 2 cm, so the 3d printer can’t print it. The solution is doing the part in two steps, we cut the part in two on it symmetrical plane. It avoids to use supports, and guarantee a smooth plane. After the printing, we can assembly the to part with glue. There also different types of plastic assemble. One, called “assemblage par miroir chauffant” consists in putting some really warm blade between our 2 parts, wait that they melt and past them together.
